Departure

The sound of the train hitting the tracks as the conductor yells "all aboard!"...

The hustle and bustle of of the people scrambling to gather their luggage...all the sounds of the start of a journey that could be life changing. It's all what a person takes in from their experiences. It's not a matter of where your final destination will be...it just matters that you got on the train.

The path that will lead you on an adventure that will stimulate all your senses. My journey happens to be to New Orleans. A city of magic, music and history. I was hesitant to actually go on this trip a few months ago. And now, as I'm riding the train I realize that this trip is much more than obtaining school credit hours. It's about expanding ones knowledge on the culture, history, and the arts that makes New Orleans the city it has become. The encounters that I will have will give me a better understanding of people. People whose ideas and way of living are different from my own.

Looking around me, I see such a diverse group of individuals. From all walks of life. All with different stories to tell. The eclectic array of ethnicities, races, gender and age. Yet we all have a commonality: the historic city of New Orleans.

As a nurse, life experiences can change the way we provide care to our patients.  People are people. No matter where they come from or what their purpose may be, all people need to be cared for in a way that will guide them to better health outcomes driven along a path built from trust and compassion.

After Katrina hit, people's lives were devastated. Access to quality healthcare had already been an issue in this community, and now their only access to medications and medical treatment had been taken from them. We as nurses, give hope to those who have lost it all. We should pride ourselves on the knowledge and foundation we have built for ourselves through our education and cultural experiences to implement care that will change their lives forever, and quite possibly change ours too.

As I continue my long journey to the magical city of New Orleans, I will ponder the thought that every experience, every encounter, every learning opportunity will forever be engrained in my heart, soul and mind.
